Dictation Typing Practice
Every other tool on this site shows you the text you're copying. This one doesn't. A sentence is read aloud by your browser, and you type what you heard from memory. That's a different skill from visual copy-typing: transcription, meeting notes, and dictated correspondence all depend on holding a phrase in your head while your hands catch up.
Play the sentence, type it into the box below, and check your answer to see it compared against the original, along with your WPM and accuracy. Replay as many times as you need while you're learning the format; try to replay less as you improve.
How this is scored
WPM is calculated from the correctly placed characters in your answer against the elapsed time between your first keystroke and pressing "Check answer," using the same five-characters-per-word standard as the rest of this site. Accuracy compares your answer to the original sentence character by character. Small differences in punctuation or capitalization count as errors, since dictation accuracy in real transcription work depends on getting those details right, not just the words.
The exercise uses your browser’s text-to-speech interface for playback. Voice quality, available voices, and playback behavior depend on your browser and operating system.
Continue your practice
If dictation feels harder than expected, that's normal at first. Build comfort with visible text on the typing test, then return here once your visual typing speed feels steady.
