QWERTY vs. Dvorak vs. Colemak: Is Switching Worth It?
Every so often someone posts “I switched to Dvorak and gained 30 WPM,” and someone else replies “I switched and it did basically nothing.” Both are probably telling the truth about their own experience. Neither one is evidence of anything general. The actual research history behind these layouts is stranger than either camp’s version of it, and more useful once you know it.
QWERTY wasn’t designed to slow you down
The most repeated fact about keyboards, that QWERTY deliberately scattered common letters to prevent mechanical jamming, doesn’t hold up well. In 2011, researchers Koichi and Motoko Yasuoka at Kyoto University traced the keyboard’s evolution through early typewriter patents and the professional backgrounds of its first heavy users. What they found points somewhere else entirely: the earliest typewriters were tested and refined largely by telegraph operators, who needed to transcribe incoming Morse code quickly, and the strictly alphabetical layout that came before QWERTY turned out to be genuinely confusing for that specific job, similar-sounding code sequences were easy to mishear and mistype in sequence. QWERTY’s odd groupings look like they trace back to accommodating how telegraph operators actually worked, not a plot to fight jamming.
There’s also a less romantic reason QWERTY stuck around once it existed: Remington, the company that mass-manufactured it, ran typing schools built entirely around their own layout. Part of QWERTY’s staying power was ordinary vendor lock-in, not proof that it was mechanically or scientifically superior.
Dvorak: well-designed, and tested by the man who owned the patent
In 1932, August Dvorak and his brother-in-law William Dealey designed a layout with a clear engineering goal: keep typing on the home row as much as possible. On QWERTY, only about 32 percent of keystrokes land on the home row. On Dvorak, it’s roughly 70 percent, and overall finger travel drops to around 63 percent of what QWERTY requires. Dvorak patented the design in 1936.
Here’s the part that rarely makes it into the pro-Dvorak version of this story. The most famous piece of evidence for Dvorak’s speed advantage is a 1944 U.S. Navy study, still cited today as if it settles the question. That study was conducted by Lieutenant Commander August Dvorak, who at the time was the Navy’s own time-and-motion specialist, and who also personally held the patent on the keyboard being tested. That’s about as direct a conflict of interest as it’s possible to have in a “controlled” study.
Economists Stan Liebowitz and Stephen Margolis dug into this properly in a 1990 paper called “The Fable of the Keys,” and found that once you set aside the experiments Dvorak himself ran or supervised, the picture changes substantially. A 1956 study by Earle Strong at the U.S. General Services Administration, using a genuinely independent design with ten typists in each group, found no meaningful efficiency advantage for Dvorak over QWERTY once retraining costs were accounted for. Liebowitz and Margolis’s conclusion was blunt: the most dramatic claims trace back to Dvorak himself, and the best-documented independent research shows little to no advantage. That doesn’t mean Dvorak is a bad layout. It means the “science says it’s faster” claim you’ve probably heard rests on evidence generated by the one person with the most to gain from the result.
Colemak: built to fix Dvorak’s actual problem
Dvorak’s biggest practical flaw was never really about speed, it was that adopting it means relearning almost the entire keyboard, including the position of Ctrl-Z, X, C, and V, which breaks muscle memory for undo, cut, copy, and paste on every application you already know. In 2006, Shai Coleman released Colemak specifically to solve that. It changes only 17 keys from standard QWERTY and deliberately leaves Z, X, C, and V exactly where they are, so common keyboard shortcuts keep working without retraining.
Despite changing far fewer keys than Dvorak, Colemak actually edges it out on paper: about 74 percent of typing lands on the home row, compared to Dvorak’s 70 percent and QWERTY’s 32 percent. It’s also seen real platform adoption that older alternative layouts never got, it ships as a selectable layout on Windows 11, macOS, Linux, Android, and ChromeOS, rather than requiring third-party drivers. A community variant called Colemak-DH later adjusted a couple of the original’s more awkward lateral finger stretches, mostly aimed at people using split ergonomic keyboards.
So does switching actually help?
Modern research on typing performance points the same direction we cover in our piece on realistic WPM benchmarks: keyboard layout is a genuinely small factor next to rollover technique, finger alternation, and error rate. The fastest independently verified typing performances on record are still overwhelmingly produced on standard QWERTY. Even the most famous Dvorak result, Barbara Blackburn’s claimed 212 WPM peak from the 1980s, was never verified under the kind of controlled conditions Guinness later required, which is a meaningful part of why Guinness dropped the “fastest typist” category from the book entirely in 1987.
None of that means switching is pointless, it just narrows down who it’s actually likely to help:
Probably worth trying if you’re managing genuine wrist or finger strain and want a layout that redistributes load away from the fingers doing the most work on QWERTY (the strongest evidence-backed reason to switch), if you mostly type on your own machine where your layout setting follows you everywhere, or if you’re doing it as a deliberate hobby project and enjoy the process.
Probably not worth it if you regularly use shared computers, public terminals, or work machines you don’t control, since you’ll be fighting QWERTY muscle memory every time you’re not on your own keyboard. Also skip it if your job runs on keyboard shortcuts you’ve built years of muscle memory around, or if the actual goal is a higher WPM number, since the research above suggests you’d get more speed for far less disruption from the accuracy and rollover habits covered in our piece on how touch typing skill actually develops.
